How I’m Building a Peaceful Home With Six Kids (In Real Life)

Some days my house is a mess — okay, most days. The kids are loud, life feels absolutely overwhelming, and even though I love my family dearly, peace can feel impossible.

In the middle of all this chaos, I’ve been figuring out what actually works to create a calmer home. As an overwhelmed mom, I know that managing a busy household can feel impossible — but small rhythms and strategies have helped me find more peace in real life.

My Real-Life Strategies for a Calmer Home

Here are some things that help me keep our chaotic household running with a little more calm and less stress:

  • Daily checklists for the kids – Instead of giving orders all day, each child knows what they’re responsible for. It reduces constant questions and helps keep our home organized.

  • My own daily to-dos – I make a list for myself too, but I don’t get frustrated if it doesn’t all get done. Flexibility is key for busy moms.

  • A daily focus – Each day has a general goal (like laundry, cleaning, homeschooling prep), but I stay flexible for life’s surprises.

  • Rotating chores weekly – Keeps kids engaged and prevents boredom or burnout.

  • Something to look forward to each day – Friday tech day, Sunday candlelit dinner, Monday library day, Tuesday movie night… it gives the kids (and me!) a little excitement in the middle of the chaos.

We are not a morning-person family. Mornings start late and slow. And yes, sometimes — gasp — we watch cartoons or some TV together for 30 minutes after waking if I haven’t managed to get breakfast ready before everyone is up. (Honestly, most days lately I’ve been up with the baby — sometimes even the toddler — through the night.)

We don’t have set times for the kids’ checklists. The goal is simple: get it done before lunch, before dinner, and before bed. That’s it.

What Peace Really Means for Overwhelmed Moms

Peace isn’t silence. It isn’t a perfectly clean home. It isn’t a perfect schedule.

For me, peace is:

  • Having a general idea of what will happen each day

  • Making plans to handle the unexpected

  • Maintaining a flexible attitude when life doesn’t go as planned

Even in a chaotic household, things can feel manageable — and moms can still breathe.

Follow along as I share more about rhythms and systems that help busy moms build a peaceful home. You don’t have to fix everything today. Start with just one small thing at a time, and you’ll likely notice a little more calm in your home sooner than you think.
